Cyclone Joan passed through Port Hedland in December 1975 and caused widespread destruction, with many buildings damaged and roofs torn off. The horses from the Pony Club stables in Pretty Pool were taken to shelter at the Racing Stables at the Turf Club before the cyclone hit, which turned out to be a wise move as the Pony Club stables were flattened. The Turf Club stables survived.

Many long term residents remember Joan (1975) as the worst cyclone in living memory, with George (2007) a close contender.
