A massive rainfall just in time for Cup Day in 1972 left the track so sopping wet that the Cup was nearly called off – an unthinkable act! Club President Jack Haynes and the Port Hedland Port Authority leapt into action to save the day, deploying one of the Port Authority’s helicopter pilots to fly a chopper back and forth over the sodden track for several hours to dry it out. The tactic was successful and the Cup went ahead.
